Most of the news we hear about breast cancer deals with addressing the disease after it's already been diagnosed. The best treatment for any disease, is through prevention. Here are 10 ways to lower your breast cancer risk.

1. Exercise and be consistant about it. Moderate physical activity, like brisk walking, 3 times a week can reduce a young woman's risk of developing breast cancer by 33%, and the risk of breast cancer after menopause by 26%.

2. If you smoke, quit now. The sooner, the better.

3. Eliminate sugar from your diet. Cancer cells thrive on sugar.

4. Eliminate processed foods. That includes soda, fast food, chips, and other junk food.

5. Eliminate or cut back on starchy carbs like white bread, white rice, and white potatoes.

6. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Brightly colored produce, like blueberries, cantaloupe, broccoli, have the most anti-cancer qualities.

7. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

8. Get an adequate 7 to 8 hours of sleep each day.

9. Avoid stress and find ways to combat unavoidable stress. A hot bath, massage, yoga, or music can help.

10. Strengthen your immune system with supplements like Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Although none of this is breakthrough news, it's a reminder that it's our responsibility to deliver the preemptive strike in the battle against cancer. Exercise and nutrition are keys to maintaining our bodies as havens, not battlegrounds.
