Articular cartilage is a tough and resistant tissue that covers the end of the knee bones inside the joint. It helps the joint glide smoothly and softens the shock during high impact activities. Articular cartilage consists of cells called chondrocytes that live inside the cartilage matrix to keep the complex matrix made of large molecules and collagen healthy. As cartilage wears out, the chondrocytes fix it in small quantities. However, chondrocytes can't replicate, so once damaged, these cells cannot repair the matrix and the cartilage matrix degenerates. Dr. Zaslav can help you treat your articular cartilage problems.
Dr. Zaslav has been working closely with athletes for many years and fully understands their desire to spend as little time in rehabilitation as possible. Therefore, he does his best to encourage effective healing with minimal down time. He provides individual attention to each patient, in order to ensure appropriate care is always given. In addition to cartilage repair, Dr. Zaslav offers a number of sports medicine options, including, but not limited to: shoulder and knee surgery.
Dr. Zaslav also specializes in treating the loss of meniscus. Meniscal tears in the knee are one of the most common reasons for knee surgery in America. Damage can occur in just one event or in a slow and progressive deterioration without any known cause. Loss of meniscus can result in pain, swelling and a loss of knee and body function that can curb an active lifestyle. The meniscal tear creates an uneven body weight that stresses the knee irregularly, resulting in articular cartilage damage. A problem that can result from this is degenerative arthritis.
Dr. Zaslav earned his B.S. in Biology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He attended Medical School at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, N.Y. and went on to earn fellowships in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at New York University / Bellevue Medical Center, and Lenox Hill Hospital. He earned his residency in orthopedic surgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Zaslav completed additional training in cartilage repair and became one of the first Americans to perform it in 1994. He also received further training in 1998 for mamiscal transplants. He is a leading author on an FDA-sanctioned multi-center study on Articular Cartilage Transplantation. Dr. Zaslav is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, The American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and the International Cartilage Repair Society. He is currently the company physician for The Richmond Ballet, and serves on the Boards of Directors of The Ballet and The Richmond Metropolitan Sportsbackers Association.
