More Natural Cures for Workaday Woes
Modern medicine is coming to agree that the new ways are not always necessarily the best ways. It's reaching the conclusion that the latest pharmaceuticals are not always necessarily the only way to assault an ailment, that homespun remedies can often be the most helpful and least expensive approaches to a variety of illnesses.
Here are a few remedies, most of them readily available in your refrigerator or pantry, that many mainstream medical experts today have come to swear by. (Read more about More Natural Cures for Workaday Woes)

St. John's Wort and Depression
Some studies show St. Johns wort helps alleviate depression, and some don't. But one government agency, one educational institution and a nonprofit biomedical group recently gave it a something of a thumbs-up.
"There is some scientific evidence that St. John's wort is useful for treating mild to moderate depression," according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
And the University of Maryland Medical Center says that, "in numerous studies, St. John's wort has been effective in reducing depressive symptoms in those with mild to moderate but not severe [or major] depression." (Read more about St. John's Wort and Depression)

Pentagon Researches Acupuncture, Etc. for Service Members
The Pentagon is sinking about $5 million this year into studying the effect of acupuncture on relieving brain-damage headaches among soldiers caught in battlefield explosions, of animal therapy on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and of meditation and yoga on increasing emotional buoyancy.
"This new theme is a big departure for our cautious culture," said Dr. S. Ward Casscells, the Defense Department's assistant secretary for health affairs. The department, he said, is "struggling with" PTSD, "as we are with suicide, and we are increasingly willing to take a hard look at even soft therapies."
The Army had a record suicide rate of 115 in 2007, and 2008 is expected to exceed that. (Read more about Pentagon Researches Acupuncture, Etc. for Service Members)

Alternatives to Antidepressant Drugs
Even though the movement is still small, psychiatrists are increasingly shying away from pharmaceuticals in the treatment of depression.
There is a subtle shift toward supplementing drug antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, with treatments like herbs, nutritional supplements, meditation and acupuncture, as scientific evidence mounts for the latter's effectiveness. (Read more about Alternatives to Antidepressant Drugs)

The Healing Influence of Religiousness
Study after study over the years has shown that practicing one's religion - with all of the persistence and sincerity that demands - inevitably leads to improved health and ability to recover from illness.
For example, a 1987-95 research investigation of 21,000 Americans found that those who attended worship services more than once a week experienced a seven-year greater life span than their counterparts who never attended such services.
Epidemiologist Jeff Levin, who wrote the book God, Faith and Health, conducted studies showing that older adults who thought of themselves as religious had better overall health than the faith-less. (Read more about The Healing Influence of Religiousness)

Anti-Depressants Not Much Better Than Placebo
The current generation of anti-depressant drugs have little benefit for most patients, according to new research from the University of Hull. The researchers accept that many people do feel the effects of the drugs, but they argue that it could be a placebo effect. People feel better only because they are taking medication they feel will help them. Researchers focused on drugs which work by increasing levels of the mood controlling chemical serotonin in the brain. These included Prozac, Seroxat, along with a similar drug called Efexor - all common prescriptions. (Read more about Anti-Depressants Not Much Better Than Placebo)

Worried Sick? There Might Be Some Truth There
A recent report by health provider BUPA has found that people's worries are damaging their health by causing sleepless nights, loss of sex drive, and erratic eating habits. The 2007 Worry Report demonstrates that almost one in five people constantly worry about numerous things, and more than half feel they worry more now than five years ago. Half of the people surveyed this year, which is 6% more than in 2006, claimed they were more worried about their health and their family's health than about other concerning issues such as climate change or terrorist attacks. The survey finds that almost three quarters of people worry, but around 19% admit to worrying all the time or about a number of things. (Read more about Worried Sick? There Might Be Some Truth There)

Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems
A Review in The Lancet reveals the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce stressors related to cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore examined records between 1990 to 2006. They observed how stress affects the sympathetic nervous system, impacts physiology, and the effect it has on the cardiovascular system. Lead author, Daniel Brotman, claims "Acute physical stressors such as sugery, trauma, and intense physical exertion are well known triggers of cardiovascular events. Emotional stressors are increasingly recognized as precipitants of such events." (Read more about Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems)

Rapid Rise in "Complementary" Medical Services

Have you been to a practitioner besides your family physician? Whether chiropractic care, acupuncture, yoga or homeopathy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has become increasingly common in the United States, and 72% of adults use some form of CAM therapies according to the US National Centers for Disease Control and US National Center for Health Statistics.
A recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine highlighted how chronic pain tends to be under treated because doctors worry about over prescribing medications, and being liable for malpractice or even criminal penalties. Many doctors fear entering the field of pain management at all. Many patients are also concerned about becoming dependant on medication or about the invasiveness and dangers of surgery and anesthesia. CAM therapies, which are able to treat pain and help manage diseases without medication or surgery, are rapidly growing services as people search out better, safer approaches.
So how effective are Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies? (Read more about Rapid Rise in "Complementary" Medical Services)

Yoga Is a Possible Treatment For Depression
Yoga may offer solutions for depression, anxiety and epilepsy.
Reports from the World Health Organization and elsewhere estimate that mental illness comprises fifteen percent of the global disease burden. Depression and anxiety disorders contribute heavily to these numbers. One treatment approach is offered by various medications designed to stimulate the brain's primary inhibitory neuro transmitter, gamma-aminobutyric (or GABA) levels. Findings released by Boston University School of Medicine report that yoga may elevate these GABA levels in the brain and may provide a way to treat these disorders.
