One-Third of Hospitals Provide Alternative-Medicine Option
In 2005, a study found that one in five hospitals provided their patients with the option of alternative medicine, but by 2007 that number had risen to one in three.
"The largest hospitals in the U.S. are doing it," said Laurel Anderson, former director of health policy at the Minnesota Hospital Association, now with the Center for the Evolution of Health Care, an organization that promotes the availability of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in hospitals. "Minnesota is a leader in this area. The Minnesota Holistic Nursing Association has the most active association in the country." Nanosilver Seen as a "Serious" Health Risk
The widespread popularity of nanosilver products as a cure for everything from colds to conjunctivitis is being questioned by a number of scientists, who say the products could lead to serious toxic reactions and disease.
Nanosilver drinks, eyedrops and tablets are made with ultra-tiny particles of silver metal - so tiny that 800 of them fitted side by side could span the width of a human hair. Acupuncture Outperforms Drugs on Hot Flashes
Acupuncture does as well and is longer-lasting than drug therapy in handling the hot flashes and sweating that afflicts 80 percent of women who are treated for breast cancer, according to recent research.
In addition, the study showed, treatment with acupuncture engenders none of the nasty side effects associated with conventional drugs. Johns Hopkins Opens Alternative-Medicine Center
In another sign of the slow but steady integration in the United States of the mutually suspicious fields of Western and alternative medicine, a center recently opened called the Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine and Digestive Center.
"We conventional doctors need to acknowledge that some of our therapies don't always work," said Linda Lee, a gastroenterologist with 20 years of experience. Counting Lee, the center has 13 specialists, including acupuncturists, nutritionists and massage therapists. There is also a psychotherapist who employs hypnosis and touch therapy. Pentagon Researches Acupuncture, Etc. for Service Members
The Pentagon is sinking about $5 million this year into studying the effect of acupuncture on relieving brain-damage headaches among soldiers caught in battlefield explosions, of animal therapy on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and of meditation and yoga on increasing emotional buoyancy.
"This new theme is a big departure for our cautious culture," said Dr. S. Ward Casscells, the Defense Department's assistant secretary for health affairs. The department, he said, is "struggling with" PTSD, "as we are with suicide, and we are increasingly willing to take a hard look at even soft therapies."
