Lasik Helps U.S. Retain Pilots, Astronauts

The natural human aging process is in a constant war with the U.S. military and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Aging has always degraded the vision of Air Force pilots, Navy divers and NASA astronauts - and this has made it difficult for the respective services to retain them.

The government has always feared that eyeglasses and contact lenses could be broken or dislodged in the course of the service members' often grueling work, threatening life, limb and government property in the process. Even with the advent of Lasik surgery, the fear didn't subside. (Read more about Lasik Helps U.S. Retain Pilots, Astronauts)

Choosing Between Traditional and Custom Lasik

Lasik eyesight-correction surgery, a phenomenal breakthrough when it was first approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration in 1995, has recently been trumped big-time by the innovation known as wavefront Lasik technology, which is some 25 times more precise than its older cousin.

The consumer still has both choices available today - the traditional versus the new custom technique - but there is an enormous difference in technology. (Read more about Choosing Between Traditional and Custom Lasik)

Sutureless Cornea Transplant Surgery

“I could barely see, like when I would get up in the morning everything was so foggy. The first thing that was in my mind was that, wow, maybe I’m going blind,” says Dyeane Dunn.

Dyeane Dunn’s corneas were damaged. She would need a cornea transplant to replace the diseased tissue. Doctors were able to perform a sutureless cornea transplant…an innovative technique that replaces only the damaged cell layers.

“This is a phenomenal procedure because it is only taking away what is bad, it is also not causing changes in the surface of the cornea so you don’t have to worry about dealing with lots of sutures later on in the eye, if patients don’t take care of them it can cause rejections later on in the eye, can cause infections, they cause astigmatism, irregularities, by putting in only what is needed it’s the best way to operate,” explains Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus of Long Island College Hospital. (Read more about Sutureless Cornea Transplant Surgery)

CATARACTS AND STATINS

Cataracts are a common problem as we age. In people over the age of 75, two-thirds have the most common type of cataract.

There are at least 300 to 400, 000 new visually disabling cataracts annually in the U.S.
So preventing them would be key; but we really don’t have a good handle on how to do this.

Now, though, it appears popular cholesterol lowering medicines might be able to help do just that.

“Someone hit me with a cane in a bus yes a lady hit me with a cane in the bus,” cries Betty Brissett. Certainly, it’s not the most common way someone gets a cataract, but yes, the blow caused her to develop the degenerative condition that clouds the lense of the eye. And of course, there was no way she could have prevented that from happening. (Read more about CATARACTS AND STATINS)

Vision 20/20

An eye exam will show any abnormal arterial growth that will threaten one's eyesight. Lenses are used to re-focus light to land where it is supposed, correcting this error of refraction. (Read more about Vision 20/20)

New Lasic

Lasik is a new procedure that borrows technology from laser keratotomy and radial keratotomy to correct near sightedness and astigmatism. To correct near sightedness, doctors try to change the way light is refracted through the eye. (Read more about New Lasic)

Keratoconus

Keratoconus comes from the Greek word meaning conical cornea. The cornea is the clear windshield of the eye and is responsible for refracting most of the light coming into the eye. (Read more about Keratoconus)

Hyperopia

Myopia and Hyperopia are terms for near sightedness and far sightedness. Ideally, light that enters the eye is refracted by the cornea which is the clear covering on the front of the eye and is also refracted by the lens, coming to a sharp focus on the retina at the back of the eye. (Read more about Hyperopia)

Detached_Retina

Ideally light that enters the eye is refracted by the cornea, which is the clear covering on the front of the eye and is also refracted by the lens, coming to a sharp focus on the retina at the back of the eye. (Read more about Detached_Retina)

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis or pink-eye is an infection of the lining of the eye or the eyelid produced by a virus or bacteria. Bacterial conjunctivitis produces a thick yellowish discharge. Both types are highly infectious. (Read more about Conjunctivitis)
